I spent a month on photography work in Tokyo and had an unforgettable time exploring the unique culture and chaotic streets of the city in my spare time. While Tokyo has the skyscrapers, lights, and millions of people running around everywhere, just like it’s famous for, one of my favorite parts was the different neighborhoods it has too, each with its own vibe and character. Also, when it comes to people watching, it doesn’t get any better than here.
Tokyo is definitely a city I could live in and spend my days photographing its endless streets of life and lights. A month gave me some time to explore, but with so much to see and experience, I’d love to spend much more time in Tokyo in the future. Here’s 33 Street Photography photos I took in my spare time during my busy month in Tokyo.
If you ever want to capture a more personal side of people than candid Street Photography provides, you should get to know the people first. This could be for something as small as street portraits or as big as a project where you spend time documenting their lives and who they are.
How do you get to know people you’ve never met before and have them allow you to photograph them?
Shooting from the hip means that instead of bringing the camera up to eye level to take the photo, you hold it down at waist level and take it. Since you’re not able to frame or focus it with your eye, you have to rely on pointing and guessing instead. This sacrifice allows you to be much less noticeable on the street when taking the photo.
I recently stopped in Russia for a couple of weeks to visit some friends and to work on a small photography project with The Royal School of Russian Ballet. While I stayed pretty busy, mostly having an incredible time with friends, I did manage to make time for a little Street Photography in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow.
Saint-Petersburg has a magical feeling and I highly recommend adding it to your travel list. The architecture is beautiful and the canals throughout the city add to the European fairytale vibe. While they are both very large cities, Moscow definitely has much more of a big city cosmopolitan vibe.
I had an amazing time in Russia. It’s a unique place with plenty to experience and I’d love to visit again to really focus on Street Photography. Here’s 33 Street Photography photos I took in my spare time during my busy, but incredible 2 weeks in Russia.
I’ve always been a big fan of quotes. They can be inspiring, thought-provoking, influential or just plain interesting. Here’s a personal list of 50 of my favorite quotes for Street Photography, and Photography in general.
*City Street Profiles is a series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities across the world. One of the biggest things I found lacking on the internet was Street Photography info for specific cities so you can be ready to shoot when traveling to a new city. Find the best spots to shoot, what to capture, safety concerns, street tips, and more for cities around the world. (I have personally shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for and only include my photos)
While I focus on Street Photography more lately, I still love photography that would be considered more in the Travel category too. I also try to incorporate much of Street Photography into my Travel work because I love the authentic look of uncontrolled life. Here’s some of my personal travel work I shot in Mumbai and Kerala, while working in India. (This is the last part of the 5 part series)

Does that title sound smart enough?
We all start at the same place with photography. Where your interests go from there is all a personal journey in photography dependent on many factors.
I'll always keep Shooter Files free for everyone, but any donations would be greatly appreciated and help me keep it going. Many thanks to everyone following along!
Cheers!
