3-Day Istanbul Street Photography Workshop

3-day street photography workshop in Istanbul, Turkey on August 25th-27th, 2018. The workshop will be led by myself, Forrest Walker, and Dmitry Stepanenko.

*One Month Away / Spots Open*

Workshop Description:

Istanbul sits towards the top of my list of favorite cities in the world. That especially goes for street photography. Not only is it one of my favorite cities, but it’s also a city I’ve lived in and know well. I’ll be teaming up with talented photographer Dmitry Stepanenko once again so we can provide you 2 instructors instead of 1.

I don’t know of any city that has more to offer a photographer than Istanbul. Culture, history, religion, politics, people, life, diversity, conflict, architecture, water, sunlight, color, old world, new world, and the list goes on. All of this in a city that spans two continents. For even more info on this amazing city, you can look at the street photography guide I created for Istanbul.

The workshop will include a mixture of daily photo walks, photo critiques, portfolio reviews and interactive lectures (details below). This is an intensive workshop with multiple instructors fully involved each step of the way to make sure you get the most out of your time. There will also be an emphasis on helping you fully immerse yourself in the city through street photography, so you can learn, while also having a great time experiencing Istanbul.

What’s Included?:

  • A variety of guided street photography walks giving a wide view of photo opportunities and exploration in the beautiful city of Istanbul.
  • 1-on-1 shooting with each of your instructors to provide you constant feedback, tips, guidance, and allow you to observe how we work. We will also mix up activities and photography assignments into small groups to give you a chance to work on your photography without distraction.
  • Multiple educational and inspirational lessons covering different aspects of street photography.
  • An initial portfolio review followed by daily critiques of your photos taken during the workshop.
  • Constant access to both instructors, including outside of the workshop’s scheduled time. We’re here to make sure you get as much as possible during your time in Istanbul.
  • Small number of students to better provide for each of you.
  • Activities planned to give time for bonding with other photographers, while having a great time in Istanbul.
  • A memorable experience not only improving your photography, but also enjoying one of Europe’s most amazing cities.

Additional Information:

  • The workshop will be limited to 8-10 people so we can keep the groups small and give plenty of personal attention. With two instructors, we can have a 1 to 4-5 ratio and allow more quality interaction.
  • The workshop fee covers not only the time during the workshop schedule below, but also the time spent on workshop preparation with each individual, and any time needed outside of the daily schedule while in Istanbul.

20 Questions in Istanbul with Kerem Nasipoglu

*An interview series with a play on “20 questions,” where I try to mix it up with different questions. Some serious, some not so much. I’ll also be focusing the series on some of the best street photographers from the cities I visit around the world during my 100 Cities project.

The beginnings of my Major Cities project started almost 4 years ago while I lived in Istanbul, Turkey. This amazing city was not only the first city I included in my project, but 86 major cities later, it’s still at the top of my list of cities in the world for photography. While living there, I met and became friends with a local photographer by the name of Kerem Nasipoglu, one of the most passionate and involved street photographers in Istanbul, which is saying something. And being the first city on my project, I realized I never interviewed a local photographer from the city so I could think of no one better than Kerem to have for this city’s installment of 20 Questions.

While being very involved in the street photography community, Kerem’s street work blends with a strong interest in social documentary work. Documenting daily life as it happens and finding stories within it all is what interests him the most. Discovering these moments and differences from what surrounds him as he walks the streets of Istanbul daily really drives his passion and you can see it in his work.

So now to learn more about him, it’s time for 20 Questions in Istanbul with Kerem Nasipoglu…

33 Street Photography Photos from Delhi, India

Returning to India to cover the last few cities for the project, I started in the north this time in major city #50 Delhi. Thankfully, I had friend and local photographer, Vineet Vohra, to help show me a few of his favorite places and the rest of the time I spent doing my normal exploring and non-stop walking the city with my camera. A little food poisoning slowed me down some, unfortunately, but I still made sure to push through. “Delhi Belly” is part of the experience here, anyway :) Delhi is big, historic India in all of its chaotic glory, but with its own signature Delhi character and look. Being so large and spread out, it can take some time to truly experience this city, but with so much activity, market life and busy streets, there’s plenty of areas around for you to discover.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Delhi…

7 First Impressions of Delhi, India
(From a Street Photography Perspective)

After finishing Ethiopia in Dire Dawa, I took a flight to Delhi, India. While I’d been to Delhi before, and India many times, I’d yet to photograph Delhi for the project. So, after focusing on Mumbai and Southern India’s major cities the previous year, now it was time for a few in Northern India, starting in chaotic Delhi.

When many people imagine India, they imagine chaos filling the streets, smells filling the air and honking horns filling their ears. Well, if that’s what you imagine, then maybe no city in India brings that to life more than Delhi. Mumbai and Delhi are India’s largest cities, but they’re very different in character. While they both have that India flavor, Mumbai feels more cosmopolitan while Delhi feels older. Packed with history, markets, life and yes, pollution, Delhi has an atmosphere and look all its own. If you really want to experience India, you can’t miss Delhi.

So here are my first impressions of Delhi, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

33 Street Photography Photos from Dire Dawa, Ethiopia

After Addis Ababa and a project detour in Harar, my time in Ethiopia finished in city #49 Dire Dawa on the 100 City project. A late addition recommended by friend and photographer, Yves Vernin, I didn’t have my usual amount of time here. So, instead of a full week plus to photograph the city, I had to get in as much as possible within only a couple of days. Fortunately, Dire Dawa was the perfect city to maximize my time here. Compact and full of interest, life and color, I was able to just step outside and start shooting. With some of the most beautifully colorful streets in the world, a mix of influences and charm, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere different from the rest of Ethiopia, I have to pass on my recommendation to you all too.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my little time in Dire Dawa…

7 First Impressions of Dire Dawa, Ethiopia
(From a Street Photography Perspective)

After making a project detour in Harar, I took a bus to Dire Dawa, Ethiopia for another major city on my 100 City project.

I hadn’t originally planned on spending time in Dire Dawa, but decided to fly out of Ethiopia here and include it on the recommendation of friend and photographer, Yves Vernin. I’m glad and thankful for that too because Dire Dawa quickly became one of the best surprises of the year. Even though it’s now the second largest city in Ethiopia, you won’t find much information about it online. So, it was mostly just step out the door and start exploring for this city. Luckily, the city center alone was enough to spend days here with your camera. With some of the most beautifully colorful streets in the world, a mix of influences and charm, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere different from the rest of Ethiopia, I have to pass on my recommendation to you all too. If you’re in Ethiopia, include Dire Dawa.

So here are my first impressions of Dire Dawa, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

33 Street Photography Photos from Harar, Ethiopia

After Addis Abba, I took a short break from the 100 City project to explore a smaller city, but one I’d been wanting to photograph for a while in Harar. I rarely take a break away from working on my major city project, but Harar was too special to pass up while in Ethiopia. Considered Islam’s fourth holiest city, it quickly became my favorite walled city I’d been to anywhere. Void of the tourism that’s taken over many other walled and holy cities, Harar really takes you back in time to a very local and authentic atmosphere in Ethiopia. The friendly vibe and endless interest to explore and get lost inside the walls, and even outside, became a highlight of the year.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my short time in Harar…
