33 Street Photography Photos from Seoul, South Korea

After a quick stop back “home” in Ho Chi Minh City, I was back on the road working on my 100 City project in major city #54 Seoul, South Korea. It doesn’t get much bigger and sprawling as Seoul so there was a lot to explore within its mix of urban atmosphere, old traditions and new trends. With the help of an excellent metro system and a ton of walking, I was able to see a large variety of neighborhoods that not many cities can provide, where you’ll find old markets and villages not far from trendy shopping streets and k-pop street performers. It’s an enjoyable city to explore with your camera from day to night, and the first city I finally broke the 50 kilometer barrier in a day on foot doing just that. It’s also a city I’ll likely return to so I can discover even more of Seoul.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Seoul…

33 Street Photography Photos from Dhaka, Bangladesh

After finishing my last leg of India, I flew to Dhaka, Bangladesh, major city #51 on the project. Dhaka is the densest, fastest growing city in the world, with world leading traffic to match. Working against the congested traffic, city layout and other troubles can bring some challenges, but within all that chaos, is a friendly city full of life. Filled with chaotic streets, markets, old world atmosphere, history, spirituality, and energy, you won’t get bored in Dhaka. Along with all that, though, it brought the most welcoming experience and passionate photography community to date.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Dhaka…

33 Street Photography Photos from Kolkata, India

After photographing Varanasi, the last stop on my final leg of India for the project was Kolkata, coming in at Major City #52.

Years ago, Kolkata was my first introduction to India. After visiting so many other cities in India since, there was always something I missed about Kolkata. I didn’t know if it was how you never forget your first or if Kolkata something special, even by India standards. Well, after coming back to include it my project, Kolkata does have something special. It’s confirmed. While one of India’s largest cities, it brings an old world atmosphere and chaos compacted into a city that’s much easier to walk than other big Indian cities. It feels made for city photography too, which is why it’s known so well in the photography community. While not as known to the general traveler as places like Mumbai, Varanasi or Rajasthan, I’d recommend Kolkata just as highly as any of them. Especially for street photography.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Kolkata…

33 Street Photography Photos from Dire Dawa, Ethiopia

After Addis Ababa and a project detour in Harar, my time in Ethiopia finished in city #49 Dire Dawa on the 100 City project. A late addition recommended by friend and photographer, Yves Vernin, I didn’t have my usual amount of time here. So, instead of a full week plus to photograph the city, I had to get in as much as possible within only a couple of days. Fortunately, Dire Dawa was the perfect city to maximize my time here. Compact and full of interest, life and color, I was able to just step outside and start shooting. With some of the most beautifully colorful streets in the world, a mix of influences and charm, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere different from the rest of Ethiopia, I have to pass on my recommendation to you all too.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my little time in Dire Dawa…

33 Street Photography Photos from One Week in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

After South Africa, I took a flight up to Ethiopia, starting in major city #48 Addis Ababa on the 100 City project. Being by far the country’s largest city, many visitors more interested in the rural, less traffic-filled side of the country don’t spend much time to get to know Addis Ababa. Beneath its chaotic and rapidly growing urban sprawl of an exterior, I found a mix of history, tradition and interest meets big city life. The colorful old character of Piassa and the the largest open air market in all of Africa, Addis Merkato, were two areas alone that made it worth exploring with my camera.

So, here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Addis Ababa…

33 Street Photography Photos from One Week in Johannesburg, South Africa

After starting South Africa in Cape Town on my 100 City Project, next came the country’s largest city, Johannesburg.

Johannesburg, commonly shortened to Joburg, is the largest city in South Africa, with one of the largest economies in all of Africa. While being a continental financial hub with plenty of wealth and a trendy, cosmopolitan vibe, it also has extreme poverty and in terms of crime and homicide, has become one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Joburg is filled with juxtapositions. Within that edge and danger, there’s a vibrance and friendliness to the city that makes it stand out among all of my urban travel. There’s much to explore, experience and photograph in this big city, if you take the risk.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Johannesburg…

33 Street Photography Photos from One Week in Cape Town, South Africa

After San Juan and teaching a workshop in London, it was back to the 100 City project with a 12 hour direct flight down to city #46 Cape Town, South Africa. This had been a city I’d wanted to explore for many years and it didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately, a large wave put a damper (pun intended) on part of my time here, as it crashed against a wall and my lens, ruining it. While I had to wait until Johannesburg to find a replacement, I did try a 14mm(21mm equiv.) for the first time here, which can be seen in some of these photos (see if you can spot them). While it was too wide for my taste and I returned it, it was fun to try out. Cape Town’s mix of urban city and edge with beautiful beaches and landscape was a great place to try it out too.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Cape Town…

22 Street Photography Photos from 5 Days in San Juan, Puerto Rico

After Barranquilla, came city #45 San Juan, Puerto Rico on the 100 City project. Due to some money-saving flight scheduling on my way to London for a workshop, San Juan became an unexpected addition. My time here came before Hurricane Maria, but weather conditions still kept me inside much of the time. So, while I didn’t get as much photography in as normal during the project, I still made sure to get as much shooting in as possible.

So here’s 22 photos that I was able to capture during my time in San Juan…

33 Street Photography Photos of Carnival in Barranquilla, Colombia

After Medellin, my last stop in Colombia was city #43 Barranquilla on the 100 City project. While Barranquilla is one of Colombia’s largest cities, it’s most known for its Carnaval celebration. South America’s 2nd biggest Carnaval happens here, while providing a very different scene compared to the continent’s biggest in Rio de Janeiro. While not as crowded and elaborate, you get a more intimate Carnaval experience in a package that’s still bigger than every city outside of Rio. Barranquilla’s local, yet welcoming and crazy Carnaval experience is one you won’t find anywhere else.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Barranquilla…

33 Street Photography Photos from One Week in Medellin, Colombia

After Bogota, came city #43 Medellin, Colombia on the 100 City project. Nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring, Medellin sits in the central region of the Andes mountains, giving it a warm, yet cool climate that matches its personality. Medellin has one of the more picturesque mountain backdrops around, but the beauty doesn’t stop there. Coming from a past reputation of danger, it’s become one of the safer, most welcoming major cities you’ll find in Latin America. From the vibrant neighborhoods to the people to the cable car views, Medellin is easy to fall in love with.

So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Medellin…
