33 Street Photography Photos from One Week in Johannesburg, South Africa
After starting South Africa in Cape Town on my 100 City Project, next came the country’s largest city, Johannesburg.
Johannesburg, commonly shortened to Joburg, is the largest city in South Africa, with one of the largest economies in all of Africa. While being a continental financial hub with plenty of wealth and a trendy, cosmopolitan vibe, it also has extreme poverty and in terms of crime and homicide, has become one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Joburg is filled with juxtapositions. Within that edge and danger, there’s a vibrance and friendliness to the city that makes it stand out among all of my urban travel. There’s much to explore, experience and photograph in this big city, if you take the risk.
So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Johannesburg…

Experiencing and capturing the city, as we will, is also designed to help maximize your improvement and learning in photography. You will be challenged, while seeing more and having more opportunities to reach your goals during the workshop.
+Night Walks: Las Vegas keeps the light on and stays alive into the night. So, in addition to the daily street photography walks, I will include optional night walks (Friday night’s walk is most encouraged). I will take you to different parts of the city to fully experience Las Vegas and provide you more opportunity for unique photos.
- Mixed in with the daily walks, we will also have time for daily presentations, instructions and photo critiques. Slide shows, group discussions, techniques and continual feedback will be included.
- The main focus of the workshop is street photography, with some crossover into documentary. Candid and un-posed is the aesthetic I will be most looking for in course instructions and discussions, while you are free to take posed shots for personal enjoyment.
- Before the workshop, we will have time to discuss your interests in photography, what you would like to get out of the workshop, along with a portfolio review. I can also help with arrangements on a place to stay, as I’d prefer for us all to stay together so you can get the most out of the workshop and experience (You are welcome to choose your own lodging, though. Preferably, along the main strip).
- Workshop is limited to a small group of 5 to provide individual attention and a better, more valuable experience.
What’s Included?:
- Planned street photography walks providing a wide view of photo opportunities and exploration in the unique city of Las Vegas (+ optional night walks).
- Opportunities for 1-on-1 shooting with myself to provide you constant feedback, tips, guidance, and allow you to observe how I work. I will also mix up activities and photography assignments to give you a chance to work on your photography without distraction.
- An instructor that has experience photographing over 70 major cities on foot, while going deeper and off the beaten path, will give you an opportunity to get to know the city better and capture more unique shots.
- Improvement in different techniques, understanding light, learning to see more and being comfortable capturing the shots you want to make.
- Multiple educational and inspirational lessons covering different aspects of street photography.
- An initial portfolio review followed by daily critiques of your photos taken during the workshop. I want you to follow your own interests and vision so I will be working with you to improve towards your personal goals in photography instead of boxing you into one-size-fits-all.
- Constant access to myself, including outside of the workshop’s scheduled time.
- Activities planned to give time for bonding with other photographers. A memorable experience not only improving your street photography, but also enjoying your time in Las Vegas.
- The workshop fee covers not only the time during the workshop schedule below, but also the time spent on workshop preparation with each individual, and any time needed outside of the daily schedule while in Las Vegas.
Thanks for checking these details out and I hope some of you can join me this May in Las Vegas!

7 First Impressions of Johannesburg, South Africa (From a Street Photography Perspective)
After starting South Africa in Cape Town on my 100 City Project, next came the country’s largest city, Johannesburg.
Johannesburg, commonly shortened to Joburg, is not only the largest city in South Africa, but also an economic center of Africa. While it brings a reputation of crime and danger, it also provides a vibrant, rapidly changing city. Within some of its danger and edginess, you’ll find a friendly and trendy heart to the city. It’s a big city with plenty to see and hip neighborhoods to explore. While it might be the city I felt I needed to worry about safety more than most any other during my project yet, it’s also one of the friendliest and warmest big, urban cities I’ve experienced yet.
I always try to be honest and not your typical travel fluff making every destination look like the perfect dream. So, I will be open about the dangers here, but I will also try to provide tips that can help because I truly feel Joburg is worth it, with more than enough positives to outweigh the warnings.
So here are my first impressions of Johannesburg, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

33 Street Photography Photos from One Week in Cape Town, South Africa
After San Juan and teaching a workshop in London, it was back to the 100 City project with a 12 hour direct flight down to city #46 Cape Town, South Africa. This had been a city I’d wanted to explore for many years and it didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately, a large wave put a damper (pun intended) on part of my time here, as it crashed against a wall and my lens, ruining it. While I had to wait until Johannesburg to find a replacement, I did try a 14mm(21mm equiv.) for the first time here, which can be seen in some of these photos (see if you can spot them). While it was too wide for my taste and I returned it, it was fun to try out. Cape Town’s mix of urban city and edge with beautiful beaches and landscape was a great place to try it out too.
So here’s 33 photos that I was able to capture during my time in Cape Town…
7 First Impressions of Cape Town, South Africa (From a Street Photography Perspective)
After teaching a workshop in London with Dmitry Stepanenko, it was back to the project with a city that had been on my list for a long time. So, for City #50 during my 100 City Project I took the longest direct flight in my life down to Cape Town, South Africa.
Situated in one of the most picturesque spots you’ll find anywhere for a city its size, there’s no denying Cape Town is a good-looking city. Nicknamed the “Mother City,” sitting below Table Mountain next to endless beaches, you’ll also find one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world. With all of its natural beauty, it’s not surprising there’s a very outdoorsy feeling here. Mix all that with its urban atmosphere, history and mix of cultures, it makes for one of the more unique cities yet during my project. Cape Town has a lot to love about it, all with some beautiful light and stunning backgrounds that make it a great city for some street photography too.

22 Street Photography Photos from 5 Days in San Juan, Puerto Rico
After Barranquilla, came city #45 San Juan, Puerto Rico on the 100 City project. Due to some money-saving flight scheduling on my way to London for a workshop, San Juan became an unexpected addition. My time here came before Hurricane Maria, but weather conditions still kept me inside much of the time. So, while I didn’t get as much photography in as normal during the project, I still made sure to get as much shooting in as possible.
So here’s 22 photos that I was able to capture during my time in San Juan…
7 First Impressions of San Juan, Puerto Rico (From a Street Photography Perspective)
*My time in San Juan came before Hurricane Maria. All impressions are based on the city before the hurricane’s devastation to the city, which still hasn’t recovered. I’m a bit cautious of providing links to help because of the questionable corruption and some suspicious refusals of help coming from there, but here’s one link that includes 12 Effective Ways to Donate Money for you to choose from, if you would like to help.
City #49 San Juan had never been on my list to visit on the 100 City Project, but due to a money-saving flight opportunity on the way to London to teach a workshop, I chose to explore, photograph and learn more about this popular Caribbean destination. San Juan is an urban city, so it’s not like most other island destinations, but it has its fair share of beaches and tourist attractions too. Being the second oldest European-founded settlement in the Americas, there’s a lot of history here. You can see the colonial influence within the walls, but outside there’s a much different city that many visitors never venture. There’s a raw energy felt in San Juan, but its heavy tourist and USA influence takes away some of its authenticity and interest, in my opinion. Still, there’s a mix of latin, colonial, american, caribbean and urban city character all in one. Not every city contains a blend like that. Flights are cheap here too.
So here are my first impressions of San Juan, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…
