7 First Impressions of Tunis, Tunisia
(From a Street Photography Perspective)

Tunis, Tunisia came in as major city #61 on my Major City project and here I’ll share a few first impressions covering the city with my camera. Tunisia is famous for being a Star Wars’ film location, but its capital, Tunis, isn’t on the radar for travel as much as it deserves. Here, you’ll find a mix of influences and atmosphere that you can’t find many other places, especially for the price. There’s the picturesque mediterannean coast with white and blue houses reminicent of the greek islands. In the center you get a completely different vibe filled with old character, chaos and one of the best medinas around. A mix of Maghrebi, French/European, and African influences can be felt and seen all over. Tunis also happens to have a well-deserved reputation for being the most open city in the region, providing a vibe that stands out if you’ve traveled in North Africa before. Coming from its past dictatorshiop, there’s a laid-back feeling that blends well with the mix of influences to make an enjoyable city for street photography that isn’t on most people’s lists.

Workshop Description:

On this four-day workshop, you’ll be able to capture the areas that Tokyo is famous for, along with some of the local photographers’ favorite spots, while challenging yourself to improve your photography in a variety of ways. This will be an intensive and highly involved workshop led by someone who’s photographed over 100 major cities across the world inside and out. Tokyo still stays at the top of my list for street photography and I’ve spent countless hours exploring its endless streets of interest over the years. With a 5 participant max on the workshop, you’ll be able to get the most out of our time together in Tokyo, Japan.

This will be an intensive, but highly enjoyable workshop experience that includes a mixture of daily photo walks, photo critiques, interactive lessons, editing sessions, activities and discussions. A major focus will be on photographic vision and seeing more. You’ll learn to see more photos when out shooting, how to put together what you see into the photo you want to make, improve your editing process and help find yourself in your photography. There will be a lot of walking and photography, with myself fully involved each step of the way to make sure you get the most out of your week. You will be able to fully immerse yourself into the city through street photography, so you can learn more, photograph more and have a great time experiencing Tokyo.

What’s Included?:

  • A variety of guided street photography walks giving a wide view of photo opportunities and exploration in Tokyo.
  • 1-on-1 shooting with your instructor to provide feedback, tips, guidance, and allow you to observe how I work. You will also be allowed to work on your photography without distraction during the walks.
  • Multiple educational and inspirational lessons covering different aspects of street photography.
  • An initial portfolio review followed by daily critiques and a final editing lesson covering your work during the workshop.
  • Constant access to your instructor, including outside of the workshop’s scheduled time.

  • A memorable experience not only improving your photography, but also enjoying one of Asia’s most interesting cities.

7 First Impressions of Cairo, Egypt
(From a Street Photography Perspective)

Cairo, Egypt came in as major city #60 on my Major City project and here I’ll share a few first impressions covering the city with my camera. Cairo had been on my project list since the start. It doesn’t get much bigger and historic than this ancient city turned chaotic metropolis. At 22 million people, this urban sprawl next to the famous pyramids is filled with activity and variety of life  around every corner. While its sheer size and buzzing streets might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I quickly fell for Cairo’s one of a kind atmosphere. Personally, I do like big cities because of the variety of life and interest there is to explore, but it needs to set itself apart from the rest. And Cairo definitely does that. The history, the crumbling character, the chaos, the unique neighborhoods and the signature golden brown look all come together to make one of my favorite cities of the year for street photography. Yes, it’s not the cleanest, quietest city, and there are touts and hassle to endure, but it’s more than worth it in Cairo.

7 First Impressions of Skopje, North Macedonia
(From a Street Photography Perspective)

Skopje, North Macedonia came in as major city #58 on my Major City project and here I’ll share a few first impressions covering the city with my camera. While only a border away in Romania, I was surprised how many people hadn’t even heard of Skopje when I told them it was my next city. North Macedonia is rich with history and its capital Skopje is one of the largest cities in the Balkans. The Balkans are an interesting region to me, with Belgrade being one of the more memorable cities I’ve photographed, so I wanted to include a couple more cities here in my project. Skopje didn’t disappoint.

There’s an ancient feeling here mixed with a quirkiness that makes it interesting to explore. It’s laid-back and easy to get to know on foot, which makes it even better for street photography. Before I even knew much about Skopje, I knew about Shutka, the only majority Roma city in the world, which is located just 7 kilometers from Skopje’s center. Shutka’s unique gypsy atmosphere combined with Skopje’s own surprisingly enjoyable interest makes for a city that I’d recommend to anyone.

Sam Ferris : OFF QUAY

Photographed between 2013-2018 this zine is the first publication of my project ‘Off Quay’, which focuses on the areas surrounding Sydney’s most famous landmarks. The images depict everyday occurrences amidst the settings of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and ferry wharves. It is in these locations that people from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life are corralled into the same condensed, public space. Tourists marvel at the beauty of the harbour, while locals glide by on their daily commute seemingly immune to the charms of their surrounds. When a ferry docks, wave after wave of people come streaming through and the chiaroscuro light serves as a disclosing tool that exaggerates and magnifies the sheer chaos and multitude people caught up in this daily ritual.
