After Addis Abba, I took a short break from the 100 City project to explore a smaller city, but one I’d been wanting to photograph for a while in Harar. I rarely take a break away from working on my major city project, but Harar was too special to pass up while in Ethiopia. Considered Islam’s fourth holiest city, it quickly became my favorite walled city I’d been to anywhere. Void of the tourism that’s taken over many other walled and holy cities, Harar really takes you back in time to a very local and authentic atmosphere in Ethiopia. The friendly vibe and endless interest to explore and get lost inside the walls, and even outside, became a highlight of the year.
