Project Files: Street Hunt #17 in Rome, Italy

Another Street Hunt Episode

StreetHunters.net is one of the best Street Photography websites out there and one of the most unique things to come from the site are their Street Hunt Episodes. In these episodes, co-founder Spyros Papaspyropoulos produces a filmed Street Photography walk in cities around the world.

I was involved in their last episode in Istanbul, Turkey, where I’m currently based. You can check out more on that here and watch the episode too. It was such a great experience that Spyros asked me to be involved in their next episode in Rome, Italy. So I made a short detour to Rome during my Eastern Europe trip to make sure it happened.

A Street Hunt in Istanbul

A month ago I had the honor of being included in the new episode of Street Hunt from StreetHunters.net. In the Street Hunt videos, Spyros Papaspyropoulos, co-founder of Street Hunters, leads a filmed Street Photography walk in cities around the world. For his newest episode, he came to my current home, Istanbul.

Getting to Know the People You Photograph

If you ever want to capture a more personal side of people than candid Street Photography provides, you should get to know the people first. This could be for something as small as street portraits or as big as a project where you spend time documenting their lives and who they are.

How do you get to know people you’ve never met before and have them allow you to photograph them?

Why You Should Shoot a
Photo Series Everywhere You Travel:
Tokyo Alleys

“Tokyo Alleys” | Tokyo, Japan 2014

New to You or Interesting?

When traveling to a new city, everything you see is exciting. There’s so much that you’ve never seen before and new visual experiences are around every corner. So you take your camera and snap away at all these new sights that interest you.

While you’re finding interest in everything you see, you should also ask yourself a couple of questions, though…

Am I finding it interesting because it’s new to me or because it’s actually interesting?

Would somebody who lives here find it interesting too?

Many times we can confuse new with interesting.

Why You Should Start a Shooting Strangers Project Today

Fear of Photographing Strangers

Fear of photographing strangers is probably the #1 thing that holds people back when it comes to Street Photography.

That fear of a negative reaction can:

  • Keep you from getting close enough and taking the shot you want
  • Cause you to rush and not focus on the shot
  • Keep you from taking the photo at all

Nothing else can improve your Street Photography instantly like overcoming this fear. Unfortunately, simply ignoring this fear is easier said than done for most people. So the next best thing is learning how to overcome it. And the best way to overcome a fear is by confronting it repeatedly.

One of the most effective ways to do this is to take on a personal “Shooting Strangers” project.

What is a Shooting Strangers project?
