Participant Testimonials and Photos from Forrest Walker’s Workshops
I want to say that I really enjoyed your workshop and how it was set up. There was really so much to see and learn. The workshop really helped me to see the many different aspects that differ a good from an ordinary picture. It was a bit
overwhelming for me, but I learned that I have to make up my mind about the way I want to shoot. Sometimes that became very clear during the photo critique at the end of each day (which I really liked). I definitely enjoyed the morning session and our discussions. Watching the movies and the pictures from all the other photographers was really inspiring and a good part of the workshop. And I found the fact being in a small group really helpful. So, every one of us was getting some attention, which made it easier for the other ones to take their pictures.– Michael Westermann (Germany) : Havana Workshop
Seeing how you approached subjects and dealt with situations was very helpful for the way I learn. Starting the day with an overview of different topics was also a nice way to focus on things to work on for the day. I enjoyed the exercises and the long days of shooting with just the right amount of breaks for food and drinks. I felt like you really put in the full effort. You were easy to connect with about photography and don’t take yourself too serious, but keep it professional. I felt like it was the perfect workshop tailored to fit my needs. You seem to have a personality that could get along with many different types. I thought the workshop was a success and I would definitely repeat in the future.

I’ve done a range of photography workshops from smaller local photographers to Magnum members. Photographic talent and being able to teach photography are two very different qualities, but you were great at both. Most times, the bigger the photographer is, the less you see them during the workshop, but I really appreciated how you were with us the whole way. How personable and approachable you are for someone that produces the work you do really stood out to me, which helped connecting, while challenging us all. And having a great time together!
– Brian Payne (UK) : Istanbul Workshop
I appreciated your honesty and your humor. I really loved hearing about your project and the details of it. You were super patient whenever anyone had any questions and I liked that you weren’t trying to replicate how you shoot and instill it into anyone. You just let everyone do their own thing and help guide them along.
– Savannah Condon (USA) : Tokyo Workshop
Thank you so much for providing inspiration, ideas and encouragement. Doing street photography over the last 2 days has gotten me out of my film box and when I was shooting I had an epiphany. The weekend was what I really needed – it made me realize that I’ve been fighting what I’m naturally drawn to.
– Debbie McGufficke (Australia) : Sydney Workshop
(Some of the most valuable things were the) Overview of street photography styles and photographers for inspiration. Comprehensive touring of areas in Havana. Exploring and photographing these areas. Spending time in the real Havana, away from tourist destinations, eating at local places. (You were) pleasant and enjoyable to be with. I loved it! Looking forward to see new workshops.
– Bill Schaefer (USA) : Havana Workshop
It was a great experience participating in your workshop and I really enjoyed meeting you personally. It was a lot of fun having the challenge of shooting in Tokyo, especially under such variable conditions. I also enjoyed seeing new areas I’d never been before and of course hanging out with a great group. I thought your input on all the critiques was very valuable, as well as how you went through various photographs and discussed aspects of what made them interesting and what can be looked for in the field while shooting
– Jonathan Asberg (USA) : Tokyo Workshop
I definitely like that the communication with you and your character is very relaxed and open-minded. That made it easy not only to talk to each other, but also to hang out with each other for almost a whole week. I really enjoyed the workshop, although I was quite tired after the 6 days. It was a lot of input and I appreciate that we went to different areas each day and especially to the more remote ones, that you usually don’t visit.
– Michael Westermann (Germany) : Havana Workshop
Your workshop completely changed how I look at photography. You were able to help me see where I needed to go if I really wanted to improve my photography, but without pushing your own rules or style on me. You have to be prepared to walk a lot and put in the effort, but this workshop is for people who really want to improve.
– Thủy Minh (Vietnam) : Ho Chi Minh City Workshop
I really enjoyed the workshop. It was better than most I have attended, You are very generous with your skill transfer. I got a lot out of watching you work.

Everything was planned, with every day well organized, the shooting part, and also others activities (shopping, eating, helping with bank, etc) thanks to your excellent knowledge of the area and planning. The fact that (Forrest) was out shooting too, it was informative to see (him) working in the street, how (he) approached people, and it was motivating. This really made me (re)think how I approached street photography as a whole and the people I photograph. (Forrest) was very supportive during the workshop, not only as a photo teacher, but also to help me with different chores (lending me money, helping me with the bank), which was really nice.
– Benoit Benedetti (France) : Budapest & Havana Workshops
I very much enjoyed the classroom part of the workshop. It was helpful to learn from you and see various photographers’ work. I enjoyed visiting various parts of London and trying to look at things differently. I appreciated you working with me on technical details of my camera. It was very helpful when you would give us your personal thoughts on the street while we walked. And I definitely appreciated the feedback on my portfolio.
– Janet Heninger (UK) : London Workshop
I enjoyed going out on the street and watching you shoot as well as exchanging travel stories. As a guy who has as traveled a ton as well, I really admire the dedication it has taken you to do your 100+ major cities project. To not only go to all those places, but to explore them as thoroughly as you have, and shoot them in your style, is really something.
– Jonathan Asberg (USA) : Tokyo Workshop
(Some of the most valuable things were) analyzing your work and the work of others, breaking down the image into bite sized elements, and then explaining how to emulate that while shooting. Going over themes and how you shoot and putting that into practice. Critiques helped so so much. I loved analyzing images and photographers together. Watching other critiques and getting critiqued was probably my favorite part.
– Savannah Condon (USA) : Tokyo Workshop
Spending time with other photographers with different experiences and subject-matters, talking about photography and the presentation about different compositional elements I found helpful. For me, the part I most enjoyed was the review/editorial times, where we were able to talk about the why and how a picture was made and its strength and weaknesses. Forrest was very friendly and helpful and always willing to share his knowledge and thinking about things.
– Elton Bernardson (Australia) : Ho Chi Minh City Workshop
The workshop was a perfect blend of everything I’d wanted out of a workshop in the past. Any camera techniques you need to know, valuable looks through other photographers’ work, inspiration, photo critiques, lessons, assignments, editing sessions and so many street photography walks. I love how hands on and involved you were with us every step of the way, especially when shooting. I haven’t met a nicer, more genuine and caring teacher when it comes to photography. You really cared about seeing us improve and I could talk to you about anything.
– Elif Akyüz (Turkey) : Istanbul Workshop
I found the workshop very helpful and enjoyable, and even if street photography is not my main style of photography, I feel I have learned a lot and realise that I could ‘work the scene’ more, be patient to find the right moment, and also try to work with layers more to fill the frame in an interesting way – thank you for that.
